KYOTOGRAPHIE:
Awakening the Senses

The House of Dior reaffirms its unconditional love for art, and photography in particular, by supporting Graciela Iturbide at the 13th edition of the emblematic INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY festival held in Kyoto every April. Kyoto, A place of endless possibilities, is also home to the Dior Fall 2025 show. by marie Épineuil.

The Kyotographie festival, which was founded 12 years ago and inspired by the famous Rencontres d’Arles, has a singular purpose: that of promoting Japanese photography by displaying it alongside oeuvres from elsewhere. Doing so creates a mirror effect, a dialogue and even questioning, a source of artistic and intellectual thinking as well as a formidable vehicle for emotion that transcends borders and abolishes differences. The event is a reflection of the couple who co-founded and co-direct it: Lucille Reyboz, of France, and Yusuke Nakanishi, of Japan.

This season, 14 photographers are honoured, including world-renowned figures such as Martin Parr, JR and Graciela Iturbide – whose fascinating corpus is presented by Dior – as well as promising young talents such as Laetitia Ky, Keijiro Kai and Adam Rouhana. Each year has its own theme. Following One (2022), Border (2023) and Source (2024), the theme chosen for 2025 is Humanity.

“Humanity encompasses the diverse experiences and qualities that define us individually and collectively. As we progress as a society, how do we define humanity? In reflecting on our capacity for love, empathy and resilience, the theme of Kyotographie 2025 is illuminated by two distinct cultural perspectives: the Japanese perspective and the Western perspective, which explore the diversity of the human experience,” explain Lucille Reyboz and Yusuke Nakanishi. Two worlds, two world views.

At the Kyoto City Museum of Art Annex, photographs by the Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide, situated between documentary and a poetic gaze, speak for themselves. As she often notes, “I photograph what I am.” For Dior, supporting the artist at Kyotographie was self-evident. Firstly, because photography has always been part of the House’s history: on February 12th, 1947, in the living room of 30 Avenue Montaigne, Pat English immortalized Christian Dior’s very first show for Life magazine. Dior style has continued to inspire every generation of photographers since, and notably some of the greatest… Next, because Maria Grazia Chiuri has often celebrated Mexican culture, notably with the Dior cruise 2024 show, imbued with the spirit of strong women like Frida Kahlo and Leonora Carrington. An essential collection that Graciela Iturbide captured for Vogue México.

As Lucille Reyboz and Yusuke Nakanishi explain: The lived experience is at the heart of the works in this year’s programme. Artwork created from deep emotional responses reflect and comment on the fabric in which each one of us exists. Perhaps our common traits and values remind us of our responsibility to nurture compassion, foster understanding and create a sense of belonging and connection.” The power of images and, more generally, of art, is to enable a shared understanding of humanity in all its complexity. And Dior has contributed to this since the outset.
