Excellence

Nearly eight decades after its creation in 1947, the original amphora for Miss Dior reappeared to grace the fragrance anew. Now reinvented, it is also more slender, luxurious and precious than ever… And customizable, making it even more unique. By Antonia Map.

The founding couturier chose it himself: a bottle with generous curves, the kind that has been dedicated since antiquity to preserving the most precious of nectars, perfumes and ointments. A native of Granville, Normandy, Christian Dior had been taken with gentle floral scents from earliest childhood and considered himself as much a perfumer as a couturier.

To wit, after his debut show, which on February 12th, 1947 heralded the advent of the New Look, Christian Dior was intent on launching Miss Dior, the House’s iconic fragrance, the same year. The amphora – whose feminine curves echoed the so-called “En Huit”* silhouette – served to present additional scented creations after Miss Dior, among them Diorama, Diorissimo, Diorling and the legendary J’adore.

Now, this signature flacon – an emblem of excellence – has been revisited in an exceptional, irresistibly modern version, made more exclusive than ever by an entirely made-to-measure, customized personalization offer. Meticulously shaped, moulded and hand-engraved by one of the most celebrated glassmakers in France, it is embellished with artisanally wrapped 22-carat gold thread. As ever, it is crowned with an emery-polished cap whose subtly opaque, textured appearance allows it to better capture the perfume’s notes – to be applied to the neck, nape or wrists. Delicately concealed on the base, a reinterpreted compass rose – a timeless Dior code – completes the distinctive singularity of this highly collectible object of desire.

For lovers of refined fragrances, everything begins with a difficult decision: which to choose from the 50 or so available scents, including the House’s great classics, as well as those in La Collection Privée Christian Dior? Once the selection has been made and the essence encapsulated in an 150ml amphora comes the ritual of personalization. Which cord should be wrapped around the flacon’s neck? In all, there are eight colours and materials to choose from, making the decision a tricky one… In addition, there are the lucky charms and talismans that Christian Dior always kept within reach, including the clover and the star – or the bee and the symbolic “CD” insignia. In a divine surprise, a pink or blue silk ribbon printed with the historic houndstooth or Dior Oblique motif adds another touch of elegance.

Then comes the ultimate moment: the hand-engraving of initials, date(s), the given name of a loved one… Anything is possible, and permitted, for a supreme final touch to consecrate a perfume that is unique in the world. Yours.
