Dior feria

Lavished with red flowers, Seville’s iconic Plaza de España was transformed for the Dior cruise 2023 show. Such poetic splendour – the quintessence of the Andalusian art of living – was an invitation to celebrate and escape.

A symbol of the meeting of arts and cultures, the Plaza de España – built between 1914 and 1928 for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929 – was the extraordinary setting for presenting the Dior Cruise 2023 show by Maria Grazia Chiuri. Guests were welcomed by a monumental door designed by the artist Pietro Ruffo, which opened onto a unique and ephemeral world illuminated by thousands of traditional farolillos (lanterns). A tribute to the celebrated Feria de Abril – one of Spain’s most famous festivals – was held in the heart of this magical place blending neo-Moor ish and neo-Mudéjar styles.

A grandiose staging, imbued with the power of flamenco: nearly fifty Andalusian dancers opened the festivities, like a collective corps – a single, beating heart – moving with delicacy and fervour to the rhythm of compositions by Alberto Iglesias. A magnetic performance conceived by the Franco-Spanish choreographer Blanca Li accompanied the show, flanking the orchestra on the bridges decorated with hundreds of flamboyant red blooms. An ode to one of the House’s signature colours – “the colour of life”, as Monsieur Dior called it – this thematic hue mingled with the depth of black. Symbolic and more Spanish than ever, these enchanting shades punctuated looks, etching out the contours of an emancipated, multifaceted femininity. With a fascination for Andalusian culture, and flamenco in particular, Maria Grazia Chiuri shapes Dior style*.

Irresistibly ethereal dresses and skirts feature imposing ruffles, giving the silhouette poetic freedom of movement. Swirling outfits play on masculine and feminine codes, celebrating Carmen Amaya, also known by her nickname La Capitana, the inspiration for this collection. Infused with Seville’s aesthetic richness, motifs reveal a profusion of details. There are reinterpretations of azulejos, the graphic tiles that give spaces a neo-Baroque feel. More than mere ornamentation, embroidery transforms and structures the garment. As an all-over motif, it virtually becomes a new material unto itself, a fabric in its own right, embracing the curves of the iconic Bar jacket. That Dior icon, reinvented for this collection, pays particular homage to Chinese culture through the use of Pankou buttons. Frogging and other elements of passementerie finish creations with an architectural aura. Maria Grazia Chiuri reconsiders an essential emblem, the mantilla – a nomadic object that made its way from Northern Europe to Spain – in a number of creative iterations, whether in knit, leather or even broderie anglaise.

An accessory born of multiple influences, the Manila shawl – made using a Chinese embroidery technique and imported from the Philippines to Seville in the seventeenth century – is reinvented through exceptional pieces created with pure respect for Andalusian tradition. House icons such as the Saddle bag and the Lady Dior are elevated through the meticulous gestures of Spanish artisans, whose sculpting, painting and embroidery techniques bring to life these objects of desire. Like divine accents, hats revisit two shapes associated with equestrian costumes, while gaiters are worn with heels, conveying a horsewoman’s grace, blending elegance with a sportswear spirit. Finishing touches like gloves, in leather lace or embellished with frogging, complete a total look, straddling heritage and modernity. A joyful celebration, and a powerful collective energy that gives rise to pluralistic beauty.
