Dior Lady Art: Objet d’art(s)

Bridging heritage and creative effervescence, the Dior Lady Art concept each year writes a new page in a story that perpetually links the House of Dior to art in all its forms. In honour of its eighth edition, Dior Magazine looks back at the genesis of this unique event.

Even before he sketched his first designs, Christian Dior cultivated an unconditional passion for art. In 1928, at the age of twenty-three, he and Jacques Bonjean opened a gallery on Rue La Boétie in Paris; a few years later, it was followed by a second one on Rue Cambacérès with his friend Pierre Colle. The works of Man Ray, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, René Magritte, Leonor Fini and others were presented in these spaces where anything seemed possible. In 1947, when Dior launched his namesake couture house, he (re)discovered the powerful ties between fashion and art, evoking music, literature and architecture through his collections.
These sacred relationships are celebrated today in exceptional projects that revisit the House’s perennial icons, notably Lady Dior As Seen By and Dior Lady Art, which invite artists from around the world to transform the iconic Lady Dior.

A timeless piece with an extraordinary destiny, the Lady Dior is continually reinvented, with new variations appearing each season until it transforms into a fascinating work of art for Dior Lady Art. This multi-faceted encounter convenes the most talented of contemporary artists to play a game of reinterpreting this object of desire with a common purpose: to translate, reimagine and exalt the emblem’s history. The result is a unique sense of wonder poised at the crossroads of excellence, dreams and unbridled inventiveness.

For the eighth chapter in this spellbinding adventure – an edition that echoes Christian Dior’s lucky number – the artists Mircea Cantor, Jeffrey Gibson, Gilbert & George, Ha Chong-Hyun, Lee Kun-Yong, Mariko Mori, Ludovic Nkoth, Hilary Pecis, Mickalene Thomas, Zadie Xa, Michaela Yearwood-Dan and Xu Zhen – variously representing England, China, Japan and the United States – take turns revisiting this irresistible accessory. The Lady Dior thus becomes a blank canvas for singular œuvres, weaving a captivating conversation between Dior, world cultures and the most virtuoso savoir-faire through the prism of innovation and audacity.

A fusional alchemy between Dior and art that pushes the boundaries of desire and imagination further than ever before.
